THE PROPHETIC WORD

“… Man doth not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live”. Deuteronomy 8:3.

The Prophetic Word is the proceeding word from the mouth of God that reveals the mind of God. It is the ‘now’ word for the future (i.e., a word declared in the present that manifests in the future).

The Prophetic Word is a word from the mind of God that is declared by the mouth of His Servants. So His Servants have the responsibility to always ask God what His mind is concerning any situation (you also have a responsibility to always ask God what His mind is concerning situations of concern to you). In 2Kings 3:11, King Jehoshaphat said, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here that we may enquire of the Lord by him”?

The Prophetic Word is the declaration of the counsel of God. Once His mind is revealed then it should be declared. In 2 Kings 3; 16, Elisha declared, “…Thus says the Lord; make this valley full of ditches....”.

The Prophetic Word is a declaration of the mind of God concerning the past or the present in the light of the future. When God reveals His mind concerning the future of a particular person, event or situation, the revealed word becomes prophetic when it is declared.

The Prophetic Word is revelatory and creative i.e., it reveals the intention of God and it carries within it the creative power of God to bring to pass what is revealed and declared (Ezekiel 37: 1-10).  It has four key elements, it is released in the present, for the future, it is revelatory and creative.

HOW IT WORKS

1. The Prophetic Word can be likened to a seed that exists in the present, but when it is sown or declared, it connects the present of the seed to the future that is within that seed. When you look at a seed it reveals to you the kind of fruits it is capable of producing in the future. The Prophetic word like a seed, has within it the creative power to produce and reproduce the future harvest it carries within it.

2. The Prophetic Word is like a seed with a desirable future inside it, when it is sown or declared, it releases the desired harvest within it. For instance, the prophetic word for healing has a potential healing harvest within it and since every seed reveals to you the kind of fruits it is capable of producing, the prophetic word for healing when it is declared over an individual can produce and reproduce diverse fruits of healing because of the Divine Creative Ability within the prophetic word.

3. The Prophetic Word acts as a bridge; it enables you to move from where you are to where God wants you to be, when you receive and act on it. For instance the prophetic word for prosperity can move you from a place of lack to a place of abundance. In Matthew 14: 28 - 29, we see Jesus walking on water and bidding Peter to walk on water. The word “come” from Jesus to Peter could be likened to a "prophetic bridge" that enabled Peter move from the boat and walk on water to where Jesus was.

4. The Prophetic Word is like a knock from God on the door of your heart. Your response to the prophetic word determines God's access into that particular situation. You open the door for the possibility of Gods intervention by accepting the prophetic word or you shut the door by doubting or rejecting the prophetic word. James 1:6-7, Revelation 3:20.

ACCESSING PROPHETIC WORDS

You can access the Prophetic Word in two ways, either by enquiring directly from God on behalf of others or for yourself as was the case in 2kings 3, when Prophet Elisha initiated an encounter with the Spirit of God, on behalf of the three Kings of Israel, Judah and Edom, in order to know the mind of God. This is what you can call a "solicited prophetic word" or God gives you a prophetic word for someone or yourself without a request from you, this is what you call an "unsolicited prophetic word" as was the case with Prophet Ezekiel in Ezekiel 37: 3-4, “…Son of man can these bones live?..., prophesy to these bones and say to them, o dry bones, hear the word of the Lord…”.  Ezekiel didn’t initiate the encounter that led to him receiving and declaring the prophetic word in the valley of dry bones.

You can always trust God to give you a prophetic word when you ask, especially when your intentions are genuine and not selfish. ("...Ask and it shall be given unto you..."Matthew 7:7) and even when you don’t ask, sometimes as a result of your relationship with God, you can always draw from the fountain of Gods prophetic revelations as a servant of God; “Surely the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets”, Amos 3:7.

5 FACTORS THAT HINDER OR ENHANCE YOUR ACCESS TO PROPHETIC WORDS

1. Environment - a spiritually conducive environment enhances your ability to access a prophetic word, a spiritual worship environment enhances the prophetic flow of inspiration greatly; connect to God daily in worship and enjoy unhindered access to prophetic words. In 2Kings 3: 15 -19, Elisha had access to the prophetic word in the place of worship. Also, your physical environment influences your ability to access a prophetic word; noisy and rowdy environments hinder the flow of the prophetic, while peaceful and serene environments aid the flow of the prophetic.

2. Posture - your physical posture can enhance the flow of the prophetic, when you lie face down or kneel down in prayer or worship, you communicate an aura of total submission to a higher authority and God responds to such postural communications with a release of prophetic grace that ushers in the prophetic word. (God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble, 1 Peter 5:5).

3. Physical State - your physical state or condition influences your ability to access prophetic words. When a man is physically tired, the strain on his body affects his ability to press-in to receive revelations or interpretations for words received and this can easily blur his spiritual perception. The spiritual benefits of rest cannot be overemphasized, especially its impact on the prophetic flow (… and He rested on the seventh day… Gen 2:2). I deliberately use short periods of rest (a 30mins to 1hr nap) from time to time as a RESET BUTTON when I have issues with concentration when i study, or when I need to prime the prophetic flow of inspiration.

4. Emotional State - emotional instability negatively influences the prophetic flow of inspiration and can hinder access to the prophetic word. A double minded man (emotionally unstable) according to James 1: 6-7, is unstable in all his ways and is not likely to receive any thing (including the prophetic word) from the Lord. Negative emotions like anger and fear can open the door for negative prophetic inspirations from the devil. In this state of negative emotions, the voice of a man’s emotions become so loud that it can drown the still small voice of God. Overtime i have found out that when my word level is low (chapters of the bible I read daily) I am more prone to emotional instability. The more of the bible you read every day, the more spiritually stable you become (set a daily target).

5. Purity of your Spirit - spiritual information is easily accessible when our spirits are not defiled or contaminated. What you see, say and hear can contaminate your spirit and hinder your ability to access the prophetic word easily. The purer your spirit, the clearer your spiritual perception. Spend time to read, meditate and study the word and other related spiritual resource materials like books, articles, and  audio/visual content to cleanse or purify your spirit.
