SPIRITUAL SENSE OF SMELL

 

“And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed. Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine” Gen.27.27-28  

Every one of us was created by God with 5 physical senses and 5 spiritual senses; the sense of sight, sense of hearing, sense of touch, sense of taste and the sense of smell. The spiritual sense of smell is one of the senses that God has given us that enables us to communicate with Him, discern spiritual activity as we interact with our spiritual environment. 

When your physical sense of smell is active, you are able to identify what is or was physically present in your environment based on the unique smells they emit even without physically seeing the object. For instance, the unique fragrance of a person’s perfume can communicate to you their physical presence in a room or the lingering fragrance of the perfume after they have left, can confirm to you they were once in that environment. 

Also, just like your physical sense of smell, your spiritual sense of smell can enable you discern the presence of spiritual entities in your environment, diagnose spiritual conditions and also receive spiritual information from God. One of the ways God communicates with us is through smells (scents, aromas, fragrances) we are familiar with or can identify. 

Some months ago during a seminar organized by the Inspire Prophets Network in Lagos, I remember receiving a prophetic word from God that He was connecting someone to a financial blessing. How did I receive this word from God? I didn’t see a vision nor did i hear a voice, but as I was teaching I suddenly began to perceive the strong scent of brand new currency notes (…God communicates with us through smells we are familiar with, in some instances I have perceived olive oil, blood, hot liquid coffee and all the items mentioned were not physically within my vicinity). 

Interestingly, after the seminar two people sent in testimonies confirming what God had said, they had received financial gifts in brand new currency notes(coincidence? not at all, God sees the end before the beginning). For someone reading this post, God is releasing financial blessings over you too in the name of Jesus.  

The spiritual sense of smell involves two levels of communication; 

a) What God is saying to you directly.  

b) The discerning of spiritual activities or manifestations within your spiritual environment.

THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS

STEP 1: RECEIVE REVELATION. The revelation will come in the form of a smell (the fragrance of a rose flower), your responsibility is to identify or define the specific smell you perceive. Remember God usually communicates to us through smells we are already familiar with or can identify with.

STEP 2: GIVE INTERPRETATION. You will need to discern what God is saying to you through this smell you have identified and defined. For example, Holy Spirit, I can perceive a unique smell (the fragrance of a rose flower), please what is God saying to me through what I can perceive with my spiritual sense of smell (praying in tongues can help you decode the information).

STEP 3: APPLY INTERPRETATION. The application is the action required to complement the information received. What will God have you do with the information you have received? In the illustration I gave earlier about perceiving the scent of brand new currency notes, I had to release the information as a prophetic word and God honored His word in the lives of His children. (Your responsibility is to act on the interpretation received).

KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS

1. The channel of spiritual communication is usually determined by God. He could choose to speak to you through a vision, a dream, a touch, a voice or a smell (scent, aroma, fragrance). 

2. God wants to connect the smell (scent, aroma, fragrance) you perceive with your spiritual sense of smell to spiritual information (a word of knowledge, a word of wisdom, a prophetic word, or an instruction) from Him.

PRAYER OF ACTIVATION

In the name of Jesus, I declare your spiritual sense of smell is activated. From today receive the grace to discern the mind of God and activities in your spiritual environment through spiritual scents, aromas and fragrances in the name of Jesus.
