SPIRITUAL SYMBOLS
"Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree (Jeremiah 1: 11).
Symbols can be described as the language of Visions and Dreams. They are signs that communicate words. They can be described metaphorically as a big door that has smaller doors hidden in it. In other words, the meaning of the symbol is hidden in its everyday use.
Symbols are a means for both spiritual and physical communication; for instance colours can be used as signs for both physical and spiritual communication. When the light turns RED at a traffic light junction, it communicates stop to motorists and when it turns GREEN it communicates go, without any verbal communication.
Symbols are also God’s indirect means of spiritual communication to us. For example when you see an OPEN DOOR in a dream or vision, it could mean ‘access granted to desired opportunities’, whilst a CLOSED DOOR could mean ‘denied access to desired opportunities’.
One of the reasons God uses symbols to communicate to man is because it is usually easier to remember what you see than what you hear.
There are two classes of symbols that form the basis of
God’s constant communication with man, Scriptural symbols and Circumstantial (Contextual)
symbols.
1. Scriptural symbols: these are symbols that are frequently used in the bible, with meanings or interpretations that are consistent across the books of the bible. What these symbols represent in the bible is most likely what God is trying to communicate to you through your visions or dreams any time you see them. Some of such symbols in the scriptures and what they represent are;
• LOCUSTS communicate the activity of devourers (Ex 10:15, Joel 2:25),
• TRUMPETS communicate heavenly declarations, announcements or spiritual summons (1 Sam 13:3, Judges 3:27).
• CROWNS, RINGS, SCEPTRES communicate Kingly authority, spiritual upliftment and promotion (2 Sam 12:30, Esther 5:2)
2. Circumstantial (contextual) symbols: in this class of symbols, the prevailing circumstance gives meaning to the symbol, the circumstances surrounding the physical existence, physical activity or physical use of the symbol helps to explain the spiritual implications of such symbols in visions and dreams.
For example in real life situations LADDERS are used to climb walls or scale heights and based on that context of their physical use, can communicate promotion and elevation when seen in dreams and visions.
Also, CARS are synonymous with physical transportation, movement from place to place and when you see a CAR in your dreams or in a vision without tyres, it could represent stagnation or when you see yourself in a CAR that is moving backwards or in reverse gear, it could mean regression.
In our daily existence, physical SWEAT dropping from a person's forehead is synonymous with physical exertions and when you see someone SWEATING in a dream or vision it could represent difficult times, labour without results or personal physical struggles.
The existence of FLIES is associated with contamination and filth and based on that context, when you see them in your dreams or visions can represent the presence of filthy demonic spirits.
You will always need to interpret these symbols in the context of what they are used for, how their existence affects human life or in relation to how we interpret different human experiences such as sweating, dancing, crying, food, the clothes people wear or the occupations they engage in. For example, God can show you in a vision someone dressed like a WAITER in a restaurant and what He was trying to communicate to you through that ATTIRE or OCCUPATION is the need to wait on him or wait for a while(Interesting).
Four steps on how to interpret Prophetic Symbols;
1. Describe what you have seen in detail to the Holy Spirit; in Jeremiah 1:11, Jeremiah said “…I see the rod of an almond tree”.
2. Ask for the interpretation: “Holy Spirit i just saw a plastic bucket filled with water, but as I carried it I noticed it was leaking from a hole at the bottom of the bucket, what does it mean?”
3. Meditate patiently on what you saw as you wait for the interpretation. The interpretation could be instant or it could take a while. One of the most important virtues in the Prophetic is patience. God's timing is always perfect.
4. You can also pray out the interpretation of the symbol by praying in the Holy Ghost. After describing what you have seen to the Holy Spirit and asking Him for interpretation, begin to pray in the Holy Spirit with that symbol in your mind as you consciously wait for interpretation (Go ahead try it). The interpretation could come when you are praying or after the prayer.
How to enhance your understanding of symbols;
1. Spend time reading and meditating on the scriptures (the Bible) in order to familiarize yourself with scriptural symbols.
2. Depend on the Holy Spirit for interpretation of all symbols, don't be in a hurry to assume, always ask questions.
3. Spend time Fasting, Praying in the Holy Ghost, Worshiping God with songs or listening to spirit edifying songs, Reading and Meditating on the word of God. All these spiritual activities have a way of increasing your spiritual sensitivity and the more spiritually sensitive you are, the easier it will be to get feedback from the Holy Spirit.
